Treasurer race is too close to call

By: Julie Woon

It’s neck and neck in the Illinois treasurer race between Illinois Rep. Tom Cross (R-Oswego) and Illinois Sen. Michael Frerichs (D-Champaign). As of 10:43 p.m., the vote was tied at 47.9 percent for each candidate.

Cross, who stepped down from his position as a Republican leader in the Illinois House in order to run for treasurer, will be out of political office if he loses the race. The 56-year-old lawyer was elected in 1992 to represent the state’s 97th district. His platform includes creating new jobs and protecting families through a stable economy.

Frerichs, 41, has served as the state senator for the 52nd district since 2007. Previously, he worked as the Champaign County auditor and was a member of the Champaign County Board. He has promised to reform existing programs in the treasurer’s office and perform an audit of the office starting on his first day.
